Reduce Waste over the Holidays

It’s estimated that between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, more than 1 million tons of additional waste is generated each week nationwide – and that doesn’t even take into account all the waste and resources used upstream to make all that new stuff we’re buying.

Here’s a list of ideas to help reduce waste:

Send eCards or recycled-content cards
Recycle paper cards and send electronic holiday cards to reduce paper waste.

Give the gift of togetherness
Consider making a charitable donation in someone else's name. Or, give an experience or an event to remember, such as: Tickets to a concert or sporting event or memberships to a museum or zoo.

Take reusable cloth bags on shopping trips
Thousands of bags end up in our landfills during the holidays. Reduce the number of bags by bringing reusable shopping bags for holiday gift shopping.

Use earth-friendly gift wrapping alternatives
Try the following instead of traditional wrapping paper: Scarves, handkerchiefs and bandannas, old posters and maps, newspapers (the comic sections works great), etc.

Use rechargeable batteries
About 40 percent of all battery sales occur during the holiday season. Rechargeable batteries reduce the amount of potentially harmful materials thrown away, and can save money in the long run.

Turn off or unplug holiday lights during the day
This saves energy and lights last longer.

Electronics:
Remember to recycle your old electronics at Deschutes Recycling in Bend.  TVs, computers, monitors, desktop printers, keyboards and mice can be recycled for free.  Other electronics can be recycled for a nominal fee.

Recycle your live Christmas tree
Bring yours to Deschutes Recycling at no charge or have The Boy Scouts pick it up and make a donation.

Oregon’s Recycling Markets

In recent months, China has proposed a global ban to stop accepting post-consumer plastics and unsorted paper by January 1, 2018.  Until recently, China has been the world’s largest importer of recycled paper and plastic. This announcement has severely disrupted recycling markets worldwide with major impact in Oregon.

Resident are encouraged to continue recycling, but to stop any “wishful recycling” which is putting an item into a recycling container that doesn’t belong, wishing it will be recycled.

Any items that are dirty or not on the list of materials accepted for recycling in your local market leads to contamination.  A good mantra to follow is, when in doubt, find out.

Contact your local garbage and recycling provider for a recycling guide or pick one up at Deschutes Recycling.  Follow the recycling guide and remember keep all types of plastic bags and film out of your recycling carts.

Compost Application

Our compost is rich in microbes and nutrients. Our product is "alive" with the nutrients needed to make your plants flourish.

Compost is not intended for direct planting because of the heat generated by the microbe activity in it.

For this reason, avoid planting directly in our compost products or top dressing lawns over 1/2" in depth. Always blend compost into existing soil for best results.

If you have any questions, please contact Deschutes Recycling at 541-388-1910.

What Can I Do With Plastic Bags?

Rethink Waste Project is a project of The Environmental Center through a partnership with Deschutes County Department of Solid Waste and our local garbage and recycling service providers.

They offer great ideas and tips for reducing, reusing and recycling. Here is a great post all about plastic bags.

Plastic bags. They keep our food fresh and safe, conveniently hold stuff together, and litter the heck out of our land and sea. So above all, the best plastic bag is the one not needed. That being said, despite our best efforts, plastic still comes into our life. It then becomes imperative that we deal with it responsibly.

CAN I RECYCLE PLASTIC BAGS?
No, plastic bags cannot be mixed at our curbside mixed recycling bins (and neither should these things), mostly because plastic film gets caught in the machinery at a Material Recovery Facility and mucks up the whole system. Plastic film, however, CAN be recycled at many grocery stores across Central Oregon. Look for bins usually located indoor or outdoor near entrances.

WHAT IS PLASTIC FILM?
Grocery shopping bags are considered plastic film, and so are a lot of other common products that you’re probably currently tossing in the trash or tossing in hour home recycling bin, unaware of the headaches you’re creating down the line. Here’s a quick list of what you can bring:
  • Plastic shopping bags
  • Plastic shipping envelopes
  • Bread bags
  • Dry cleaning bags
  • Case wrap (think case of water bottles)
  • Air pillows
  • Food storage bags (zip-locs)
  • Bubble wrap
  • Product over wrap (like toilet paper for example)
  • Newspaper bags
WHERE CAN I RECYCLE PLASTIC BAGS AND FILM?
When we posted our video on social media, one of the questions was WHICH grocery stores accept plastic bags. Well I didn’t have a recent list so I called around to the major grocery stores around Central Oregon to get an accurate list of which stores provided a bin where customers could recycle their plastic shopping bags. Here is a current list of those stores:

BEND
Safeway: All 3 locations – Westside, Midtown & Eastside
Albertson’s: Both North & South locations
Fred Meyer
Food For Less
Target
Best Buy
Lowe’s

REDMOND
