New Compost Product....Coming Soon....

Deschutes Recycling is excited to annouce a new compost product called ReGrow.

ReGrow is produced locally from a combination of yard trimmings and food waste material in Central Oregon. All of our compost is independently tested by a US Composting Council approved lab to ensure quality and reliability.

ReGrow compost will have all the great nutrients that BioFine and SoilBuilder contain but in addition it will contain higher nitrogen content that comes from the food waste. This will be great for our Central Oregon soils which are naturally poor in quality and lack organic matter, which can be the source of many plant problems.

ReGrow will be available in the spring of 2012 at Deschutes Recycling, located at Knott Landfill, in Bend. Be sure to try some for your garden. Deschutes Recycling offers self haul and delivery service, including Saturdays . For more information, call 541.388.1910.

This time of the year with gifts, holiday cards and catalogs, it can be difficult to figure out which items can be recycled and which ones are non-recyclable.

Holiday items you can’t recycle:

Most mailing services will accept clean, bagged Styrofoam peanuts for reuse.

Christmas Tree Recycling Information

Boy Scouts troops 18, 25, 23, 60 and 460 will be collecting Christmas trees for recycling in your community on the weekends of December 31 & January 1 and January 7 & 8.

Individual Troops will post door flyers specifying which days they will be picking up trees in your neighborhood, starting mid-December. If you do not receive a flyer or need further assistance, please call and leave a message using the phone numbers below;

Half Price Yard Debris Recyclilng Event

October 31 - November 12, 2011, residents can recycle their yard debris at Deschutes Recycling for half price ($2.00 per cubic yard).

Deschutes Recycling is located at Knott Landfill, 61050 SE 27th Street in Bend.

FireFree encourages residents to complete their fall cleanup and maintenance of defensible space by bringing branches, leaves, shrubs and pine needles to Deschutes Recycling during the event. "With the burn ban in place inside the Bend city limits, this is an excellent opportunity for Bend residents to recycle their debris inexpensively and legally," says Katie Lighthall, FireFree Coordinator.

Yard debris must be clean; no rocks, dirt, garbage or plastic bags.

Deschutes Recycling Donates Produce from Garden to NeighborImpact

This is the second year for the Deschutes Recycling Garden, located at Knott Landfill in Bend.

The garden was started with the goal of donating all of its' produce to local food banks in Central Oregon. Deschutes Recycling employees plant and maintain the garden throughout the spring and summer.

To date, Deschutes Recycling has donated over 815 pounds of produce to NeighborImpact. This is up from 160 pounds in 2010. NeighborImpact will distribute the fresh produce to local food banks, helping them to provide nutritious food to Central Oregonions.

"This has been a great project and our employees love being involved with the garden. NeighborImpact is a great partner and we look forward to watching this garden grow year over year," said Brad Bailey, President of Deschutes Recycling.

Free Tire Collection Event at Knott Landfill

Saturday, September 17, 2011 from 7:00am - 4:30pm, residents can bring old snow tires and balding retreads to Knott Landfill for recycling.

Knott Landfill is located at 61050 SE 27th Street in Bend.

Tires up to 24.5" inside diameter will be accepted from households only. Tires can be on or off the rim but please keep them separated.

Limit of 12 tires per household. If you have more than 12 tires, please contact the Solid Waste office at 541-317-3163.

Project Wildfire

Deschutes County Forester and Chair of Project Wildfire Joe Stutler says, "Reducing brush and ladder fuels help reduce the intensity of a fire so firefighters can effectively suppress it and greatly decreases the potential for flames and embers to spread quickly to tress and structures."

Where are Your Most Vulnerable Places for Glowing Embers to Ignite Your Home?

Are your gutters free from debris such as pine needles, leaves and moss?
Clean them out. Despite a metal or asphalt shingle roof, the buildup of gutter debris provides necessary fuel for the glowing embers to ignite adjacent fascia boards or siding - most often made of wood.

Do your shrubs and weeds provide a path of fuel for fire to reach your trees or home?
Reduce shrubs and other "ladder fuels" around your home to reduce the threat of ground fires igniting nearby trees, or your home.

What can catch fire on your deck or patio or near your fence?
Remove weeds, shrubs or any combustible materials from around, under or on top of your deck, patio or wood fence. This includes toys, planters, construction materials, furniture and cushions along with even small piles of pine needles or leaves.

Is your wood pile near your home or other combustible vegetation?
Move wood piles at least 20 feet away from your home or other combustibles.

Do you have a wood roof?
If so, consider maintaining a charged water hose to keep the roof wet so falling embers are extinguished upon landing.

Do you have a long driveway (over 50 feet)? Make sure access to your property is clear for easy access of emergency equipment.

The Hazardous Waste Facility is located at Knott Landfill (61050 SE 27 St.), in Bend. The hazardous waste facility is open the second and fourth Saturday of each month from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

The facility accepts a wide variety of hazardous waste including:

Oil filters and antifreeze

Cleaning products and poisons

Oregon E-Cycles Program

The Oregon E-cycles program, a network of more than 250 collection sites and recycling facilities statewide that accepts unwanted computers, monitors, and TVs from the public for free, collected and recycled more than 24 mil pounds of materials in 2010. This is a 27% gain over the program’s first year.

“These figures show this program is working and is effective in handling the vast amount of electronic waste that we all generate and need to dispose of properly,” said Kathy Kiwala, E-Cycles Specialist with Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). Also contributing to the large percentage gain in the program is the ban on disposing of computers, TVs and monitors which went in effect Jan 1, 2010. This helped spur the public to find recycling sites where they could safely and conveniently dispose of these goods. Increased awareness of the ban has led to increased awareness of Oregon E-Cycles Program.

Proper recycling of electronics is important because they contain toxic metals such as cadmium, mercury, and lead. Also, recycling of these electronics leads to significant energy savings and greenhouse gas reductions.

E-Waste Recycling Results

Oregon's E-Cycles is a free recycling program for computers, monitors and TVs. The program is financed by electronics manufacturers and jointly implemented with the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ).

So far, people have been receptive to the E-Cycles program. The number of pounds have increased over (2009) with the same number of collection sites. The increase could be due to several factors. 2009 was the first year of the E-Cycles program where computers, monitors and TVs could be recycled for free.

In 2010, once the disposal ban went into affect where computers, monitors and TVs could not be disposed of in the landfill, the number increased. "Approximately 36 semi loads of electronic were shipped out of Central Oregon - that was almost 1 million pounds," says Brian Stone operations manager with Deschutes Recycling.

If that old TV or computer is recycled in Bend it will be sent to IMS Electronics Recycling in Vancouver, Washington to be dismantled, and its component parts are likely to be sent to additional recyclers across the country. Eventually those parts will end up in new Products.

Recycling TVs, computers an monitors is free for households, as part of the state program. For other items, such as fax machines, printers, keyboards and cell phones, Deschutes Recycling charges a fee.

Half Price Yard Debris Sale a Big Hit!

For the third year in a row, Deschutes Recycling and FireFree have offered Bend area residents a terrific value for recycling their fall yard clean up debris. The half price sale enticed residents to recycle 5,414 cubic yards of woody biomass.

“The half price sale event is a key part of involving area residents in removing debris from around their homes and property,” says Brad Bailey President of Deschutes Recycling. “This event is a great partnership between Deschutes Recycling and FireFree.”

“With burning no longer allowed in the city of Bend, the half price sale provided a valuable alternative to area residents while increasing awareness about other steps they can take to reduce the potential for catastrophic wildfires reaching homes and neighborhoods,” says Katie Lighthall, FireFree Program Coordinator.

Lighthall reminds residents that the FireFree message is a year-round effort to educate community members about how they can be prepared for wildfires.

Deschutes Recycling Donates Produce from Garden to NeighborImpact

This spring, Deschutes Recycling, located at Knott Landfill, started a vegetable garden to grow produce for donating to local food banks. Employees planted and maintained the garden throughout the spring and summer.

Deschutes Recycling worked with NeighborImpact to determine the best vegetables to plant for the garden. The garden included potatoes, zucchini, peas, squash, carrots, onions and beans. This season Deschutes Recycling donated 160 pounds of produce to NeighborImpact.

"NeighborImpact really appreciates receiving local produce for distribution to our Partner Agencies, said Steve Murray, NeighborImpact Food Bank Coordinator. “The product we received from the garden at Deschutes Recycling has helped us provide nutritious food to Central Oregonians. We look forward to future partnership with Deschutes Recycling and their garden."

“This has been a great project that our company and employees have been very excited to kick off. We are always looking for ways to give back to our communities and we can’t wait to see this garden grow each year which will increase the amount of food we are able to donate,” said Brad Bailey, president Deschutes Recycling.

Local Bend and Redmond Garbage & Recycling Companies Offer Commercial Customers New Food Waste Collection Program

Bend Garbage & Recycling, Cascade Disposal and High Country Disposal in Redmond are excited to announce a new program for their commercial customers; Food Waste Collection.

This new program provides commercial customers another opportunity to further reduce their waste, recycle more and keep organic waste out of the landfill. Food waste material includes all food waste; meat, seafood, fruits, vegetables, dairy and bakery items.

The food waste material will be composted by Deschutes Recycling and is the only facility in Central Oregon and the second facility in the state to be permitted to accept food waste material. Deschutes Recycling is located at Knott Landfill in Bend.

“St. Charles Health System partnered with Bend Garbage and Deschutes Recycling on a pilot food waste composting program and has been instrumental in providing Bend Garbage with the material and collection experience to allow us to expand this program,” said Brad Bailey, president. “Food waste is a significant amount of the waste stream and we are excited to be able to recycle it and offer collection services to our commercial customers.”

“The Department of Solid Waste is pleased to have our composting facility permit renewed under new DEQ composting rules,” said Timm Schimke, Deschutes County Solid Waste Director. “Due to environmental factors such as low annual precipitation and depth to groundwater, our facility has been determined to be low risk for potential environmental and operational problems. This has given us the ability to consider additions to the compost operations such as food waste."

"This is an important step forward for waste recovery and the environment in our community," said Mike Riley, executive director of The Environmental Center. "Not only will this new service reduce greenhouse gas emissions from Knott Landfill, it will also recycle nutrient rich waste that used to be thrown away into valuable compost for local gardens and landscapes. Deschutes Recycling deserves a lot of credit for finding and testing a system that works for our community."

Oregon Paint Stewardship Program

Oregon DEQ approved the first paint product stewardship “take-back” program in the nation. The PaintCare program which began in July 2010 is funded by paint manufactures and allows consumers to return unused paint to participating sites for proper disposal. The non-profit organization PaintCare was created to administer this program.

Deschutes Recycling is a part of this statewide paint stewardship program and is a drop off site for the collection of post-consumer latex and oil-based paint. Residents can drop off paint during normal operating hours, which is Monday – Saturday from 7:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., closed Sundays. Topdressing Your Lawn & Mulching Your Plants

Fall Tips - for the fall gardening season, you should plan to topdress your yard with BioFine compost and mulch your plants with SoilBuilder compost from Deschutes Recycling. Compost is an essential ingredient to winterizing your lawn and garden and will help your plants come back healthy and strong after the winter.

Mulching for winter: Around the time your perennials are dying back for winter and the ground is freezing, you should mulch around your plants with a few inches of SoilBuilder. The dark compost will help insulate the roots and attract sunlight in the spring helping the soil warm a little more quickly, while releasing nutrients for your awakening plants. You will also have moisture-holding mulch in place for the coming heat of summer. For excellent, ready-to-plant soil, till 2-3 inches of compost into beds you will plant the following spring or summer.

Topdressing the lawn: Apply a thin layer (¼ to ½ inch) of BioFine compost to your lawn in the fall and again in the spring to help build up a good supply of organic matter and nutrients for the next growing season. If you haven’t done this yet, you will be amazed at what topdressing does for your lawn! In addition to helping your grass grow stronger and greener, it reduces thatch, makes turf more drought-resistant and saves water by helping soil hold moisture. It also helps bare spots fill in, helps lawns fight fungal diseases, reduces your need for fertilizers and keeps fertilizers from washing away.

Premium Ground Cover is coarser with larger particles than the Premium Mulch product.

Effective January 1, 2010 - computers, monitors, and TVs are banned from disposal in the garbage or at disposal sites such as landfills and transfer stations.

Deschutes Recycling accepts computers (desktops and laptops), monitors and TVs and will recycle them for free. All other computer peripherals such as keyboards, mice and other electronic items and appliances can be recycled for a fee.

Oregon passes first EPR paint law in U.S.

Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski signed the country's first "Extended Producer Responsibility" measure requiring paint manufacturers to manage leftover latex and oil-based paints from both consumer and commercial sources.

House Bill 3037 creates a statewide paint recycling program, beginning as a four-year pilot project. Paint companies will pay for and operate the program, with development assistance coming from DEQ.

The program will help manage an estimated 800,000 gallons of paint annually, a service valued at $6 million.

E-Waste Recycling Update

Since the new statewide program took effect January 1, 2009 where televisions, computers, laptops and monitors could be recycled for free, Deschutes Recycling has collected over 300,000 pounds since the New Year.

Residents can bring up to seven of these items per visit and recycle them for free anytime during normal operating hours of Monday - Sunday from 7:00am - 4:30pm, closed holidays.

All other computer peripherals such as keyboards, mice and other electronic items can be recycled for a fee.
